How would you make the a better world for animals?
In celebration of “Be Kind to Animals Week,” May 5 through 11, Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano, in partnership with the Humane Society of New York and North Shore Animal League America, invites students in grades three through five to participate in an essay contest. The topic of this year’s essay contest is “If I could wave a magic wand, what would I do to make this world better for animals?”
“This contest will raise awareness about the mistreatment of animals and focus on positive ideas for improving the treatment of pets,” Mangano said. “The contest also helps children learn the importance of being responsible pet owners.”
The Humane Society will select two winners from each grade. Mangano will host an awards ceremony at the Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building in Mineola with representatives from the Humane Society and the North Shore Animal League America. Prizes will include a citation from the county and gift certificates from Barnes & Noble, T-shirts, tote bags and surprises from the Humane Society. Each winner will also receive a “rescue” gift basket awarded by the North Shore Animal League America.
The typed or handwritten essays should be approximately 300 words long. The student’s name, grade, school and school address must appear on the essay, and essays will not be returned. Entries must be postmarked by April 5 and mailed to The Humane Society of New York, 306 East 59th Street, New York, NY 10022, Attn: Humane Essay Contest.
