In the new year, we resolve . . .

Posted

After a tumultuous year that featured endless political gridlock in Washington, continuing turmoil around the world and the usual mix of school news, business, politics, drama and comedy on the local scene, we once again asked members of our communities, and our staff, to suggest some New Year’s resolutions.

“I believe that people should do just that: resolve. I think that in the new year, people should make amends and seize the opportunity to say ‘sorry’ and tell loved ones how much they matter to us.”
—Kayla Knight,
Miss Wantagh 2014

“Since I entered the new year kicking and screaming, I resolve to quiet my mind. I’ve already tried listening to classical music, which I actually enjoyed, and I plan to try meditation, yoga and other self-awareness practices. And I want to meet Paul McCartney before the year is out.”
Mary Malloy,
Editor, Lynbrook-East Rockaway Herald

“Learn to play in the mud again. Everyone is so worried about everything that they forget to take time to relax or enjoy themselves. Make a mess and truly enjoy it.”
Jean Rose Bernowich,
New mother, Island Park

“Laugh at yourself sometimes. If you don’t, life is going to feel a whole lot longer than you’d like.”
David Weingrad,
Editor, East Meadow Herald

“Approach each day as if it’s your last. Live life to the fullest. Don’t put off things until tomorrow or ‘Monday.’ Celebrate life and live it for the ones who don’t have the chance to live it. Life can change in a moment, as I know firsthand. Don’t sit on the bench!”
John Theissen,
Executive director, John Theissen Children’s Foundation

“I will not look at my emails the first minute I get to the office. I will write down all my PIN numbers so I don’t have to keep redoing them. I will stop telling my grown daughters about all my hard work as a child.”
Jerry Kremer,
Herald columnist

“Working together across the aisle has certainly benefited our community. I want to continue the dialogue that I have cultivated in 2014 with Minority Leader Kevan Abrahams, to continue discussing the areas of concern that we could resolve together.”
Norma Gonsalves,
Presiding officer, Nassau County Legislature
