Lynbrook duo make Jr. High state wrestling championships

Posted

On March 9, two wrestlers from Lynbrook competed in the 2014 Junior High School state wrestling championships held at Bay Shore High School. They were Joe Becker at 98 pounds and Matthew Renz at 220. It was Joe Becker’s first try at the middle school states where he went 2- 2 on the day. Becker's weight class, which was the most competitive of all, had over 16 kids. Renz was competing in his third middle school state competition. In 6th grade he took first in the youth states. In 7th grade he moved up to the junior high school states and took third, and this year in 8th grade he took second. Renz qualified for the middle school nationals in Virginia Beach.

It was a great showing and effort to see these kids go out there and wrestle according to coach Rich Renz. They are only 13 years old and yet they work very hard at trying to be their best. Wrestling is a very tough and demanding sport that teaches young men hard work, perseverance, discipline, good character, and life skills. The Lynbrook community and coaching staff are very proud of Joe and Matt for representing the village of Lynbrook in a positive way.
