Lynbrook rolling into playoffs

With the Nassau Class B girls’ lacrosse playoffs fast approaching, Lynbrook is trying to position itself to open the postseason at home by securing no worse than the No. 8 seed.

The Lady Owls took a positive step toward reaching that goal on May 5 when they had 12 different goal scorers lead a 17-10 victory over Bethpage on the turf at Marion Street. Junior Molly Carter had two goals and three assists, while senior Emma Barrett, juniors Kerrin Montgomery and Emily Murray, and sophomore Sophia LoCicero netted a pair of goals apiece. Goalies Laura Marrandino (nine) and Hope Germanakos combined for 14 saves as Lynbrook upped its record to 8-1 in Conference IV and 10-3 overall. Bethpage’s Alexa Ritchie scored six times.

“We’re playing well,” Lady Owls coach Vin Tetro said. “If we finish out the last two regular-season games, we’ll be 10-1 in the conference with only an overtime loss to South Side. Of course the loss still stings a little, but we’ve done a lot of good things.”

The offensive output against Bethpage matched Lynbrook’s season high for a game. It also scored 17 against Hewlett and New Hyde Park. Seniors Zoe Simeone and Paige Sarnataro, juniors Karaline Bartels, Andie Bodian and Rachel Foley, and sophomores Sydney Teramo and Briana Piro all scored against Bethpage, which was Lynbrook’s first conference opponent since April 21.

“We scheduled some tough non-league games late in the season so we can see the speed of the game at another level,” Tetro explained. “We were able to work on some things that’ll hopefully make us stronger come playoff time. We want to reduce turnovers, be better in transition and use the air more, and keep improving the defense.”

The Lady Owls won two of their last three non-league games, sandwiching victories over Carle Place (12-10 on April 26) and Mepham (15-7 on April 30) between a hard-fought 10-9 loss to Oceanside, which competes in Conference I. “To hang with Oceanside like we did was awesome,” Tetro said. “They’ve got a bunch of D-I recruits.”
