Lynbrook stays hot with sweep

Posted

For a second straight week, Lynbrook took out the broom against one of its Conference A-III baseball rivals to remain in the hunt for the title.

Junior Justin Baeyens went 4-for-5 with four RBIs, and junior Tom Sullivan homered, tripled and singled and knocked in three runs as the Owls completed a three-game sweep of Floral Park on April 28 with a 15-3 road victory at Alva Stanforth Field. Sophomore Ryan Mueller picked up the win on the bump, striking out five in six innings in the process.

“The starting pitching has been great,” Lynbrook coach Al Marrazzo said. “Ryan’s our youngest arm and he’s not phased by any big situations.

“We’ve got one more big series coming up and we want to keep the ball rolling,” he added. “Either way, we’re going into playoffs off a strong regular season. We haven’t lost a series yet.”

The Owls upped their record to 11-3-1 in conference play and have a chance to finish in first place if they can continue their sweep streak against North Shore, which stands at 12-2. “It’s not going to be an easy task,” Marrazzo said. “North Shore is a very solid team.”

Lynbrook sent 16 batters to the plate and scored 10 runs in the third inning of the series finale against Floral Park to bust the game open early. Sullivan doubled home junior Paul Scibelli with the first run of the inning and later blasted a three-run homer over the fence in left.

Two days earlier, the Owls provided plenty of run support for the ace of the staff, senior Tyler Garrett, in a 13-1 home win. Scibelli went 3-for-3, Baeyens drove in three runs, and senior leadoff batter Tony Neal scored three times to lead the attack. Garrett tossed a one-hitter with eight strikeouts to improve to 5-0 on the year.

“We knew what we had in Tyler coming into the season,” Marrazzo said. “He’s doing a tremendous job anchoring the staff. He’s been tough to hit.”
