Mother's Day outings around Long Island

Honoring Mom on her day

“If you bungle raising your children, I don’t think whatever else you do well matters very much.” – Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis

Make Mother’s Day a memorable one for Mom. Beyond the flowers and cards, and even that carefully prepared breakfast, take her on a special outing that she so deserves. Consider these suggestions for spending the day with Mom.

Old Westbury Gardens
Enchant mom with a relaxing Mother’s Day weekend visit to Old Westbury Gardens. Stroll the 200 beautiful acres of wooded walks, meadows, lakes, and those amazing gardens that are now showing their first signs of glorious color. Visit Westbury House, the estate’s 107 year-old Charles II-style mansion, filled with priceless art and furnishings. Pack a lunch for a delightful picnic among spring’s delightful blooms.
“Visitors come to Old Westbury Gardens for a variety of reasons. Often, it’s to focus on a particular event or exhibit. Sometimes, especially recently with all the interest surrounding the new Great Gatsby movie, it’s to tour the house,” said Gardens’ spokesman Vince Kish. “But perhaps more so than at any time of the year, on Mother’s Day, for most people, it’s all about the flowers. The lilacs, wisteria, and a number of other mid-spring favorites in the Cottage Garden and Walled Garden, are all at their peak. For those of us who work here, it’s very rewarding to see three, and sometimes four generations of family members mesmerized by all this beauty. And as an added treat, while supplies last, every woman 18 and over gets to take home a free lavender plant.”
Bring the kids on Saturday, May 11, for a floral design workshop. They’ll enjoy creating a special arrangement for Mom or Grandma (or another important women in their life) using fresh flowers and modern design techniques, at noon. Also that day, visitors can see spring bulb displays of the Walled Garden and Cottage Garden, at 1 p.m. And check out the rhododendron sale, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., where members of the American Rhododendron Society-New York will sell rhododendrons and azaleas, answer questions, and provide tips.
