There were no surprises in the 19 races for Nassau County Legislature on Election Day, with all incumbents securing re-election.

In one of the closest races, Presiding Officer Norma Gonsalves won re-election in the 13th District with 54 percent of the vote. The Republican from East Meadow was challenged by Democrat Eileen Napolitano.

Steve Rhoads, who won a special election in March to replaced David Denenberg in the 19th District, easily won re-election. He defeated Claudia Borecky, a Democrat and Denenberg's former chief of staff, 61 percent to 39 percent.

"I’m pleased with the results," said Rhoads, who represents parts of Freeport, Merrick, Bellmore, Wantagh and Seaford. "These are wonderful communities and it’s an honor to represent them. I’m looking forward to serving a full term. There’s no shortage of major issues, but I’m looking forward to taking them head on.”

There was an open seat in the 6th District, to replace Fran Becker, who did not seek re-election. Republican William Gaylor picked up 63 percent of the vote, defeating his Democratic opponent James Paymar.

Among the wider margins of victory, Democratic Minority Leader Kevan Abrahams got 85 percent of the vote in the 1st District and Democrat Siela Bynoe won with 84 percent in the 2nd District. “I am elated that I have the confidence of the local residents and have been elected to a second term,” Bynoe told the Herald late Tuesday night.

Democrat Carrie Solages won a three-way race in the 3rd District in the western end of the county, with 75 percent of the vote.

Republicans will hold their 12-7 majority in the Legislature.
