Take a bow — five years in Lynbrook for Plaza

Theater group celebrates, adds performing arts academy division

The fall of 2013 marks the fifth anniversary of Plaza Theatrical’s Performing Arts Academy in Lynbrook — and president of Plaza Theatricals and East Rockaway resident Kevin Harrington said that he has added a performing arts academy division to his organization.

“Through our unique program, which features performance workshop musical theatre classes, students learn and acquire theatrical skills through the rehearsal process,” Harrington said. “The program culminates in fully-staged performances with complete scenery, props, and costumes.”

Performances have been held at The Long Island Children’s Museum, Lynbrook High School, and the Showplace at Bellmore Movies. Prior to the performances, students participate in the Gypsy Robe ceremony, which is modeled after the ceremony that has been a tradition with the Broadway Theatre Community for over 50 years.

The Plaza programs have received critical claim from both participants and parents. One middle school student wrote, “I had so much fun! I can’t believe the show is over. Plaza is like my second family! I can’t wait till next year!” Parent E. Melissinos wrote, “You made my daughter feel so welcome and she made some amazing friends. It was one of the best experiences she has ever had! Thank you!”

This fall, performance workshop classes will culminate in Disney’s The Jungle Book Kids (Grades 1-3), Once on This Island Jr. (Grades 4-8), and the rarely produced musical, Carrie (Grades 9-12). Workshop classes are held at the recently renovated Plaza Studio, 34 Forest Ave. in Lynbrook.

“Some children seem born to entertain while others simply love to sing, act, and express their creativity,” Harrington said. “There is an important place for everyone.”
