Hirschberg said that the Chamber donated $1,000 to start a fund for Lunenfeld, and Sterling Pierce Co., an East Rockaway printing company, donated 100 posters and 1,000 fliers to announce the fundraiser.

Keith Griffin, another longtime friend of Lunenfeld’s, is a partner at the Fishery and manages the bar there. He has also been instrumental is organizing the fundraiser.

Others have asked what they can do to help. “We hope everyone comes out to support Charlie,” Hirschberg said. “He has always been there for us.”

Hirschberg said she is planning to make a video for Lunenfeld at the fundraiser, with greetings from his friends. She suggested that people send cards to Gaylord Hospital, or go to www.gaylord.org and send an electronic card (look for e-WellWishes). Greetings will be printed, sealed in an envelope and delivered to Lunenfeld by a hospital staff member or a volunteer.

What is Guillain-Barré syndrome?
The exact cause of Guillain-Barré syndrome is unknown, but it is often preceded by an infectious illness such as a respiratory infection or stomach flu. It affects only 1 or 2 people in 100,000.
Weakness and tingling in the extremities are usually the first symptoms. These sensations can quickly spread, eventually paralyzing the entire body. In its most severe form, Guillain-Barre is a medical emergency requiring hospitalization.
There is no known cure, but several treatments can ease symptoms and reduce the duration of the illness. Most people recover, though some may experience lingering effects such as weakness, numbness or fatigue.
