What's in store for Lynbrook, East Rockaway in 2015?

Mayors tout building, transportation, infrastructure upgrades

Lynbrook Mayor Bill Hendrick and East Rockaway Mayor Francis Lenahan have begun looking toward 2015. According to the two village leaders, residents can expect changes throughout their communities.

“What we want to do is keep doing and working on things that will make Lynbrook vibrant,” Hendrick said. “We want to bring in businesses to have them build new establishments or remodel old ones. By working on and building up our downtown, we can not only offer more options to our residents, but decrease their taxes as well. We want to shift the taxing to the commercial areas where new businesses will be in the village making money, rather than taxing our residents.”

Lynbrook’s movie theater, owned and operated by Regal Cinemas, is one of the businesses that are expected to be remodeled. Regal plans to expand the six-screen, 1,800-seat theater in 2015, doubling its space. Construction will begin in March, and Hendrick said he expects the work to last about a year.

“We’re very excited about the expansion … and glad to see that they’ll be expanding the theater to such a large size,” he said. “It’s the kind of growth we want to see here in the village.”

Meanwhile, renovations at the Lynbrook Long Island Rail Road station, which began earlier this year, should be finished next year. The exterior will be refurbished, and there will be major construction below the platform. Five or six retail stores, including a clothing store, will be added under the overpass on Atlantic Avenue.

“We’ve been in close talks with the MTA about the station to make sure their contractor gets the project finalized,” Hendrick said. “We anticipate construction being completed [next] year, and we’re excited to see the station get a lot of improvements.”

The village will also be home to new doctors’ offices, operated by North Shore LIJ Hospital. Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology opened on Sunrise Highway in November.

“We’re glad to see more medical offices come here to the village,” Hendrick said. “We really are proud to offer our residents plenty of top-notch medical options close by.”
