East Rockaway village officials hand out annual honors

Posted

The East Rockaway village board of trustees honored athletes, a local businessman and an elected official at its final meeting of 2017 on Dec. 11.

Among those that were recognized at the meeting were the members of the East Rockaway girls’ varsity volleyball team, which defeated Carle Place to earn the Nassau County Class C championship at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of SUNY Old Westbury on Nov. 8.

“I’d like to thank the parents and coaches particularly for encouraging the students and your children to continue with the sports and doing a good job — excelling even taking on their academics,” Mayor Bruno Romano said.

Also honored were Mike Carver, who was recognized for being named Businessman of the Year by the East Rockaway Kiwanis Club, and Assemblyman Brian Curran, who the club named Public Official of the Year.

Carver is the owner of Shane Oils Ltd. body shop on Atlantic Avenue, while Curran, a Lynbrook resident, has served in the Assembly since 2010.

“My father used to say that it is not the award that is important but rather the people that give it to you,” Curran said. “He could not have been more correct. The East Rockaway Kiwanis Club is made up of really wonderful people who donate their time and talents to making East Rockaway a great community to live and raise a family. I was truly honored to be recognized by this outstanding bunch of people.”
