New York American Water to replace water mains in East Rockaway

New York American Water announced Tuesday that the company will invest $700,000 to install a new, 8-inch ductile iron water main along East and West Boulevards in East Rockaway.

The new water main will replace 2- and 6-inch water mains that were installed in the 1920s. The project will also include the replacement of two fire hydrants and 85 utility-owned service lines.

“The replacement of water mains is an essential part of ensuring the health and safety of a water system,” Carmen Tierno, president of New York American Water, said in a statement. “It’s for this reason that we dedicate such substantial portions of our capital expense budget for this type of work.”

The project was scheduled to begin on July 9, and will take about six weeks to complete. Roads that will be affected include East Boulevard, from Kirgan Court to Cooke Street, and West Boulevard, from Sampson Street to Cooke Street.

Residents should note that these streets may be closed between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information, call the New York American Water customer service center at (877) 426–6999.
