$1.8 million for roadway project

Malverne village intends to spend $1.8 million on a roadway project that will resurface approximately six Malverne streets.

The targeted streets, all of which have had water and gas mains replaced, include St. Thomas Place, Norwood Avenue, Nassau Avenue, Ogston Terrace, Derby Court and Silver Street. Village officials stressed, however, that this target area is still tentative. “[The streets] won’t be finalized until the requirements contract bids are received and analyzed,” said Terri Emmel, village clerk. “We’re doing a requirements contract where they’re giving us dollar amounts based on length.” Emmel said the curbs of some — not all — of the streets will also be redone where it's necessary.

The village took out a 15-year serial bond in June to fund the project, Emmel said, which will be paid from the debt service line of the village's operating budget.

The village has advertised the requirements contract in this week’s issue of the Herald, among other places. Bids are due back to the village by October 4 at 11:00 a.m.

Emmel said this effort is Phase 1 of a five-phase project that will eventually include every street in Malverne. A time period as to when all five phases would be complete could not be estimated. Many of the roads in the village were last overhauled in the late 1980s when the village’s first female mayor, Cathy Hunt, came into office.
