A water main wish list for 2015

Posted

Last week, officials from various departments at the New York American Water Company — including production, engineering and distribution — met to discuss, among other things, a water main replacement schedule for Malverne. “Right now we have Malverne Avenue and Nassau Avenue scheduled for replacement,” said Production Manager Richard Kern. “Those two streets are included in the 6,000 feet of main we’ll replace at least during the first six months of this year.”

That’s good news, but a bigger issue still remains: brown water.

By the end of 2014, New York American Water had replaced about 19,000 feet — roughly 3½ miles — of water mains in Malverne over the past six years. There are, however, another 23 miles of road in the village that remain untouched, and some streets are in need of replacement sooner rather than later.

Which streets are high on Malvernites’ wish list for water main replacement? A few residents who are fed up with their brown water made their preferences known on the Facebook page “I love Malverne but hate the brown water”:

West Avenue: “Still have disgusting brown water on West Avenue in Malverne!” Allison E.

Home Street: “Still have brown water on Home Street — the dead-end side.” Angela B.

Foster Avenue: “Foster Ave. too!” Jen S.

Linmouth Road/Park Boulevard:
“I drained the water heater per the water company’s recommendation, and still have brown and smelly water.” Jennifer M.

Parkview Place: “My white wash is now beige.” Louanne M.

Linmouth Road, between Wicks and Rider avenues: “Same issue as Jennifer. I drain the hot water often and still get brown water. It often stains clothes and leaves rings in the sinks, etc. Water pressure is awful as well. I’m sure the water mains are as old as the houses on our blocks, and well-rusted and clogged with gunk restricting the water flow, and causing the brown ‘water’ that we wouldn’t dare drink. Thank goodness for Poland Spring.” Carl P.

Prince Court: “Water was better on Prince Ct. for a while but I still have to drain my hot water heater practically every month. We get stained clothes, kids can’t take tub baths. Water pressure still isn’t great either. Mains were replaced last year.” Greg M.
