Bike racks in Malverne

Posted

Anyone venturing into the village by bike to run an errand, get a quick bite or to see a movie can now lock up their wheels on one of the 10 bicycle racks that have been installed in Malverne last week.
The hunter green bicycle racks, which match well with the village’s decorative street lamps and benches — also in hunter green — were made possible by 14-year old Malvernite Fiona Marren, who started a “Bike Malverne” program earlier this year. Marren raised a little over $2,000 through a GoFundMe account to purchase the racks, and also conducted a bicycle safety program at the Malverne Library for children.
The inverted “U” -style bike racks are located at:

  • Village Hall, 99 Church Street
  • Scoops Ice Cream, 36 Church Street
  • Purcell Park, Hempstead Avenue and Utterby Road
  • Schwartz Chiropractic, 301 Hempstead Avenue
  • Dental Works, 322 Hempstead Avenue
  • Malverne Cinema, 350 Hempstead Avenue
  • Angelo’s Pizza, 360 Hempstead Avenue
  • Cavalieri Plaza, Corner of Hempstead Avenue and Francis Street

“This project would not have been as successful as it was without the enormous support I received from Mayor McDonald, Mr. Paul Jessup, Ms. Marianne Kobbe and the Malverne Library staff,” said Marren. McDonald, who assisted Marren in getting the program approved by the village board, said it was a program she had wanted to do for years, but other issues had taken priority. McDonald also helped solicit the help of Malverne’s Department of Public Works to install the racks.
