Clean water may be coming soon

Four Malverne streets are currently on deck

There’s good news — potentially — for residents of Riveria Court, Sheldon Place, and Malverne and Nassau Avenues: Clean water should soon be on the way, hopefully before winter sets in.

According to the New York American Water Company, new water mains have been installed on Riveria and Sheldon, but the utility is now awaiting a green light from the New York State Department of Health to connect homes on these two blocks to the new mains. A publicist for New York American Water said he expected that to happen very soon — perhaps even this week.

The water company also announced that it had received approval from the Department of Health to install a new water main on Malverne Avenue. But work there has not yet begun, according to the company, because it is waiting for approval from the village to rip up the roads. Village officials, however, say they are waiting for the water company to pay for the permits to work on the street.

According to a spokesperson for New York American Water, the company received Department of Health approval on October 17 to replace the main on Malverne Ave. On Oct. 18, they applied for a street opening permit.

A water main replacement for Nassau Ave., according to the water company, is still waiting for approval from the Department of Health. Once that is received, they will apply for a street opening permit with the village, a spokesperson for the company said.

With November drawing to a close, however, winter weather may prevent these two streets from seeing any activity until spring.
