Cuomo urges recall of contaminated children’s toy

Posted

On April 21, New York State Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the recall of “Clingy Darts,” a children’s toy that contains harmful amounts of a chemical toxin. The New York Department of State’s Division of Consumer Protection found that the children’s toy, which is often sold at local stores such as Dollar Tree, contains more than six times the federal limit of the chemical phthalate Di(2-ethylhexyl) or DEHP.

“This toy — which is made with excessively high levels of the DEHP chemical — poses an unacceptable risk to our kids and should not be on any store shelves,” Gov. Cuomo said. “I urge Dollar Tree to voluntarily pull the item from its shelves and call on the federal government to issue a recall of this product immediately.”

The chemical DEHP is a reproductive and developmental toxin in animals, according to the National Toxicology Program, and could potentially cause health problems if exposed to infants and toddlers.

If people have “Clingy Darts” at home, Gov. Cuomo advised them to dispose of the tainted product by throwing it in the garbage or conceal it in a safe area until further recall instructions, which may come with a refund.
