Malverne’s youngest Republican gets an unexpected visit

Nine-year-old Malvernite, Mario Agopian, is living proof that its never too early to get involved with politics.

Last year when Republican Chris McGrath was running for Dean Skelos’s vacant seat, Agopian, a self-proclaimed Republican, pleaded with his mom Jakki to drive him to McGrath’s headquarters to pick up a lawn sign. “I’m a fan because he’s Republican and he wants to get rid of the Common Core and lower taxes,” the grammar school student said.

But when McGrath, unaware of his young fan, showed up at Agopian’s home to make a courtesy call last week — well — that was the equivalent of Agopian meeting a rock star.

“He was just knocking on doors,” said Jakki of McGrath, “and when he found out Mario was a fan, he was more than thrilled and told Mario he could help him with his campaign [for senator].”

Mario was equally excited. “He said I could help him with answering the phone and opening envelopes — stuff like that — and getting my friends’ parents to vote for him.”

McGrath told the two he would be returning to their home in the near future with more signs for their lawn.
