Marino appointed as trustee to Malverne board

Anthony Marino, known to most of his friends as Tony, moved to Malverne only 16 years ago, making him the new kid on the block when compared to most Malvernites. “It feels like I’ve been here forever,” said Marino. “People make you feel so comfortable here.”

Yet in the span of 16 years, Marino has made a name for himself by volunteering his decades of engineering and civic experience towards the betterment of his village.

These were among some of the reasons Mayor Patricia McDonald appointed Marino to the village board on Jan. 22. He will be officially sworn in by the mayor on Feb. 4 and now occupies the seat left vacant due to the death of deputy mayor Joseph Hennessy.

Marino, who is retired, has an engineering degree, and worked for the City of New York’s Department of Design and Engineering as a deputy program director. He later moved into private industry where he worked for several construction companies over a span of 15 years. “If you look at the makeup of the board, we have lawyers, CPAs, financial people; I’m probably the first one coming in with a construction background,” said Marino. “Between the discussions lately surrounding infrastructure in the village, the possibility of a new police headquarters, and talk of a community center, I know my background could be of value,” he said.

As a member of the Malverne Office of Emergency Management, Neighborhood Watch and the Nassau County Civil Emergency Response Team, Marino has been repeatedly contributed to the safety of Malverne, serving as an unpaid consultant for the construction of the handicapped elevator in Village Hall.

He also volunteered to take on the Herculean task of surveying all of Malverne’s curbside signs, utility poles, fire hydrants, and streetlights. “The town realized they needed inventory of that, and I helped with that job,” he said. “I also tracked all the streetlights that were on for 24 hours, so the village was able to call the utility company and correct that.”
