Malverne resident and New York Police Detective Steven McDonald suffered a heart attack on Jan. 6 and was said to be unconscious, said Perry Cuocci, a Malverne village trustee. He was rushed to a hospital in Nassau County late this afternoon, Cuocci reported.

“We don’t know if he’s critical, but we do know that he’s alive,” Cuocci said.

Terry Emmel, village clerk, said she was unsure whether or not McDonald indeed suffered a heart attack, and would provide updates as they were received.

McDonald was shot in Central Park 30 years ago, which left him paralyzed from the neck down. He is the husband of Malverne Mayor Patricia Ann McDonald and father of New York City Police Sergeant Conor McDonald. He has been breathing with the help of a respirator since the shooting in 1986.
