New scam hitting stores

Kevan Abrahams warns of credit card fraud for businesses

Posted

Nassau County Legislator Kevan Abrahams (D-Freeport), in conjunction with the Nassau Council of Chambers of Commerce, would like to inform local retailers of a credit card scam recently attempted at a Rockville Centre store.

A customer will enter the store and make a purchase, and when the cashier swipes their credit card it will be declined. The customer will then pretend to call their bank and will give the merchant a fake approval code to force the transaction in to the terminal. It will seem as if the transaction was accepted in to the terminal as a sale, but it has not.

It is important to know: only the merchant can obtain an approval code by calling the authorization number provided by the credit card processor. If anyone says otherwise, it is a scam.
