Appreciating the beauty of tzitzit at DRS in Woodmere

Before Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year, Davis Renov Stahler Yeshiva High School for Boys in Woodmere dedicated a week appreciating the beauty of the mitzvah (good deed) of tzitzit. These are the specially knotted ritual fringes or tassels worn by observant Jews. The tzitzit are attached to the four corners of a tallis, the Jewish prayer shawl.

Throughout the week, DRS had several activities and programs focusing on this most important mitzvah. Rabbi Aaron Feigenbaum, mora d’asra of the IPM Minyan, delivered what called “a captivating and energetic lecture” on Sept. 23 to the student body about seeing the tzitzit as the “uniform of the Jewish people.”

On Sept. 24, each Torah study group took time to go through various sources in the Torah commentary and Jewish laws discussing this commandment. DRS Principal Rabbi Yisroel Kaminetsky also led a tzitzit making workshop for the rabbis in his office, which would come in handy later in the week when every student received a pair of tzitzit and were taught to make their own pair. The school also held a study group vs. study group Tug of String competition in the gymnasium on Sept. 25 to forge increased camaraderie between classmates.
