First snow of the season falls in Long Beach

Snow started falling across Nassau County and Long Beach around 10 a.m. on Saturday, and by noon an inch to two inches had already accumulated.

The National Weather Service was predicting three to five inches of the white stuff, with potentially higher totals on the North Shore.

The NWS said to be prepared for potentially hazardous driving conditions, particularly because wet leaves combined with snow could make for slippery roads.

The agency issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Long Island, including Long Beach, from 6 a.m. Saturday to 1 a.m. Sunday. Expect snow totals between three to five inches.

The NWS said to be prepared for potentially hazardous driving conditions, particularly because wet leaves combined with snow could make for slippery roads.

City officials said that its trucks and plows were prepared to start rolling, and encouraged residents to keep off the roads so crews could keep them clear.

Officials also urged residents to avoid parking close to intersections, which makes it difficult for plows to make turns.

Despite the snow, a number of events were still scheduled for Saturday night, including the popular West End Electric Light Parade, which starts at 6:30 p.m. and features antique cars and fire trucks, music and more.
