The Center for Science Teaching and Learning and the West Hempstead Library, located invites Long Island parents and their children to the free “Professionals in STEM” program taking place at the library on Monday, Feb. 11, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Residents will hear from a panel of experts on careers in STEM. Panelist speakers include Michael Passantino, vice president of Trinity Solar; Armandio D’Accordo, CEO of CMIT Solutions; Dr. John Tanacredi, director of CERCOM; and Dr. Ray Ann Havasy, CSTL’s director.

Supported by a New York state Regional Economic Development grant, the purpose of this program and the West Hempstead STEM Center is to offer hands-on family STEM education in a fun environment to assist people with understanding and learning about the many advantages that STEM careers have to offer.

“Only eight percent of our nation’s young people have indicated an interest in STEM careers,” Havasy said in a news release. “This is in stark comparison to 73 percent of Singapore students and 41 percent of students from Finland. If more people do not understand the importance of STEM and how these careers help innovation, then the United States will be left behind.”

To help families understand STEM and the careers that are available, CSTL is opening several STEM centers throughout Long Island. For more information, visit the library's website
