Roosevelt man arrested for driving while intoxicated in Hewlett

Luis Hernandez, 36, of Roosevelt, was arrested for driving while intoxicated at the site of an one-car accident, according to Nassau police. At 1:20 a.m. on Jan. 21, Hernandez drove his 2002 Toyota RAV4 into a telephone pole at the intersection of Broadway and Rockaway Avenue in Hewlett.

Along with Hernandez, there was an adult man and woman in the car, as well as two children, a one-year-old and a three-year-old. The occupants were taken to a local hospital for precautionary evaluations, the children were released into the custody of their mother.

Hernandez is charged with two counts of aggravated driving while intoxicated under Leandra’s Law, which makes driving under the influence with a person under the age of 16 an automatic felony, as well as two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, DWI and unlicensed operator. He will be arraigned on Jan. 22, at First District Court in Hempstead.
