Students learn how to examine artifacts

Third-graders at George Washington School in West Hempstead learned about history through artifacts on Nov. 9. Hofstra University Museum educators Brittany Kahn and Elisa Bruno visited students to share some of tips on how to properly examine an artifact.

Students had the opportunity to examine two artifacts with the use of a magnifying glass. Additionally, students also learned about what a museum is and duties of a curator. The first artifact was a piece from 15th to 16th century Japan, which featured wood with pigment, a gold leaf, metal, and glass. The second artifact was a Gelade Helmet Mask from 19th to 20th century Africa.
