West Hempstead High School pays tribute to veterans

Posted

West Hempstead High School constructed a Field of Honor to pay homage to veterans. Members of the community sponsored flags throughout the month of November in honor of Veterans Day. The flags were mounted with a personalized message and erected on the front lawn of the high school.
The Field of Honor raised $1,000 and all of the proceeds were donated to America’s VetDogs. According to the organization’s website, the service dog programs provide enhanced mobility and renewed independence to U.S. veterans, active-duty service members, and first responders with disabilities.
“We are so proud that this year we surpassed our goal from last year to support America’s VetDogs,” said West Hempstead High School Principal James DeTommaso in a news release. “It is an honor and privilege to support the needs of those who put their lives on the line every day to protect our country.”
Last year, the school raised $915 for the Lift and Shift Foundation. The Lift and Shift Foundation is a nonprofit organization founded and run by U.S. veterans that help to redirect wounded vets following their service. The foundation strives to provide access to hands-on activities in fields of science, technology and engineering.
The Field of Honor will be on display through the start of December.
