Xaga Sushi, at 217 Merrick Road in Merrick, and its sister restaurant of the same name at 1330 Broadway in Hewlett, paid their employees less than minimum wage and no overtime, among other labor law violations, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. The restaurant and its owner, Mei Yu Zhang, has agreed to pay more than $288,000 in back wages, damages and civil penalties.

Labor Department: Merrick eatery underpaid workers

Xaga Sushi, the Asian Fusion restaurant at 217 Merrick Road in Merrick, and its sister restaurant of the same name at 1330 Broadway in Hewlett, paid employees less than minimum wage and no overtime, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. The restaurants also illegally required the wait staff to pool its tips with the kitchen staff, and failed to maintain required payroll records, the DOL said. The government ordered the restaurants and their owner, Mei Yu Zhang, to pay more than $288,000 in back wages, damages and civil penalties. more

Xaga opens its doors

Xaga Sushi Asian Fusion, on Merrick Road in Merrick, recently opened for business, and owners Billy Chin, Alyssa Chen and Tom Li celebrated their ribbon-cutting ceremony with Town of Hempstead Councilwoman Angie Cullin, Clerk Mark Bonilla, Peter DiSilvio of the Nassau County Executive’s Office, Ira Reiter of the Merrick Chamber of Commerce and Nassau County Legislator Dave Denenberg. more
