Class will be in session for students in every school district in the Merricks on days that were originally slated for February break, officials say. The boards of education of the Merrick, North Merrick and Bellmore-Merrick Central High School Districts have all approved changes to their schools’ calendars, which were devised to make up instructional days lost in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. In each of the three districts, Feb. 20, 21 and 22 were officially made school days for students, in addition to other adjustments. more
In the four Bellmore-Merrick elementary districts, every grade from third to sixth surpassed the average county and state scores on the English Language Arts and math state exams, the results of which were released by the New York State Department of Education last week. School superintendents expressed satisfaction with the results, but also cautioned that their districts will need to continue to work hard to prepare students for future statewide exams, which since 2010 have included longer, more difficult problems. more
Officials in Bellmore-Merrick’s five school districts say they aren’t worried that Governor Cuomo is threatening to withhold a state aid increase if they do not agree on a new, tougher teacher evaluation system within a month. Four of the districts –– the Bellmore, Merrick and North Bellmore elementary districts and the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District –– have already instituted the new system. Meanwhile, officials in the North Merrick Elementary District, which has not implemented it, say they weren’t expecting an aid increase anyway. more
No one is sure precisely what the 2 percent tax-levy cap passed by the state last week will mean for Bellmore-Merrick’s four elementary districts and one high school district, but it could force the districts to cut student programming and lay off teachers in order to stay under the legal limit. more
Bellmore-Merrick area school administrators said this week that, yes, their districts could cover proposed state aid cuts with their unrestricted reserve funds and federal stimulus dollars, as proposed recently by Governor Cuomo. But, they quickly noted, doing so could leave them with little to no cash on hand for emergencies, and even jeopardize the districts’ long-term fiscal health. more

A fast-moving storm that dumped snow at a rate of two inches per hour swept across the South Shore last night. By the time Nassau County residents were waking up on Thursday morning, more than a foot of new snow lay on the ground.
