Even as Stop & Shop employees, community leaders from the Chamber of Commerce and the fire department, a Town of Hempstead official and local reporters gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 7:45 a.m. last Friday, and snowflakes fell fast and thick, customers hurried past to see all that the new Merrick Mall supermarket offers and start filling their shopping carts.

Plans for an overhaul of the Merrick Mall Stop & Shop have been delayed for so long that some its neighbors can scarcely believe that construction work is now under way.
Nevertheless, they say, the chain-link fences, heavy machinery and men in neon vests and hard hats outside Stop & Shop are good signs, and they look forward to seeing the work completed.

In her years at Kennedy High School in Bellmore, Merokean Sara Rosenzweig grew accustomed to finishing first among Cougar cross-country and track runners. She twice qualified for the New York State High School Cross-Country Championship, and ended her high school career last spring by capturing the Nassau County steeplechase title.

Children at Merrick Woods, the day camp on Merrick Avenue in Merrick, took part in a cavalcade of games and competitions last week as part of the camp’s Olympics. In between the opening ceremonies on Wednesday and closing ceremonies on Friday, campers played sports, ran relays, jumped rope, climbed over obstacles, learned cheers, wrote sing-a-longs, made plaques and banners, and carried out a scavenger hunt.

The Langbart family, owners of the 55-year-old Merrick Woods Country Day Camp, recently purchased a sleepaway camp, Greenwood Trails, on 100 acres in Winsted, Conn., at the foothills of the Berkshire Mountains.
