Eddie Harris, 32, was taken into custody at Grand Avenue Middle School at 5:40 a.m. on Oct. 2. Police said that Harris was fleeing from the scene of a reported stabbing and robbery in Freeport. more
After raising $2,000 for Habitat for Humanity, a group of Mepham High School students recently spent a day working with the nonprofit organization to construct a home in Central Islip for a family in need. Josephine Parlagreco, a Mepham science teacher from Bellmore, is the high school’s Habitat for Humanity adviser. more
The Town of Hempstead and the Long Island Rail Road will pilot a parking permit program at the Merrick and Bellmore LIRR stations in the near future. In selected lots, only town residents with valid stickers will be permitted to park. Stickers will cost $3 a year, said Mike Deery, the town’s communications director. more
Nassau County Police are warning young people to be on the lookout for a white van after three teens were approached in separate incidents by the driver over the past week in the North Merrick-North Bellmore and East Meadow areas. The teens were asked whether they wanted a ride. The teens ran home and informed their parents, who called police. Authorities said the teens did the right thing by running away and letting police know. more
With this week’s column, the Principal’s Office begins its sixth year. It’s time to look backward as well as forward. But first, a few thank yous are in order.
