On Nov. 4, the Veterans Legal Assistance Project, which was formed by law student-veterans in 2012, held its biannual one-day law clinic dedicated to veterans at the Maurice A. Deane School of Law. There, pro-bono attorneys helped veterans with discharge upgrades, pending appeals and estate planning.

In August 2015, Matthew Goodison-Orr, a third-year Hofstra University law student, began working with Gary Port, a West Hempstead resident, attorney and U.S. Army veteran, on a pro bono legal case: A marine had suffered a brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder while on duty in Iraq, and never received treatment from the military after he requested it. He began to self-medicate with marijuana, and was kicked out of the Marine Corps after a urine test.

The North Merrick School District is seeking to borrow $14.65 million for infrastructure upgrades at Camp Avenue, Fayette and Old Mill Road elementary schools, which administrators say are essential for the schools’ long-term use. Local residents will decide at the May 19 school vote whether to approve a bond sale to fund the buildings and grounds improvements.

The Merrick Board of Education unanimously agreed on March 5 to authorize the school district to spend as much as $200,000 to implement several new security measures in the district’s three schools, based on the recommendations of two private security companies.
