In August 2015, Matthew Goodison-Orr, a third-year Hofstra University law student, began working with Gary Port, a West Hempstead resident, attorney and U.S. Army veteran, on a pro bono legal case: A marine had suffered a brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder while on duty in Iraq, and never received treatment from the military after he requested it. He began to self-medicate with marijuana, and was kicked out of the Marine Corps after a urine test. more

The Fayette Elementary School boiler is well past its prime, according to school officials. Heating systems at Fayette, Camp Avenue and Old Mill Road schools show decades of wear and tear, as do many of the buildings and their grounds. The North Merrick School District Board of Education is asking the community to approve a $14.65 million bond sale to pay for a district-wide infrastructure overhaul. There will be a referendum as part of the May 19 school vote.

The North Merrick School District is seeking to borrow $14.65 million for infrastructure upgrades at Camp Avenue, Fayette and Old Mill Road elementary schools, which administrators say are essential for the schools’ long-term use.
