Birch School kindergartners in the Merrick School District celebrated the Chinese New Year with a traditional lion dance on Jan. 25.

Dressed in the celebratory colors of red and gold, the students lined the hallways holding colorful dragon masks as custodians Johnny Ng and Ata Chan paraded down the hallways under the embellished lion costume. During the parade, the kindergartners clapped and chanted “Gung Hay Fat Choy” – “May You Become Prosperous” in Chinese.

After the parade, the young students received fortune cookies and practiced picking them up with chopsticks. They also asked Mr. Ng and Mr. Chan about the history and customs of the Chinese New Year.
