David Weingrad
COURTESY NASSAU COUNTY POLICE
Alvin Brooks III

A Freeport man was arrested on the morning of Monday, Oct. 1, after police say he attempted to shoplift from the Waldbaum’s supermarket on Merrick Road.

Alvin Brooks III, 27, of Freeport, was inside of the Waldbaum’s, located just east of the Meadowbrook Parkway, at 7:40 a.m. when he was caught shoplifting by the store’s owner. Police say Brooks was trying to steal shampoo bottles.

Brooks allegedly left the store, but then returned shortly after. Police reported to the scene, and Brooks became involved in a physical altercation with the store owner and a police officer, officials said.

Brooks was arrested and charged with third-degree robbery, third-degree burglary and resisting arrest. Police said the store owner suffered a minor injury to his left knee.
