Peter Bradbeer and Lauren Peter won the boys’ and girls’ championships, respectively, of the 18th annual Lessing’s American Junior Golf Association (AGJA) Classic played on July 20 and 21 at the Woodmere Club.

Bradbeer, of Rosement, Pa., shot three rounds of 70-71-68 for a total of 209, 1 under par, to defeat both Perry Xin, of Vancouver, British Columbia, and Ethan Ng, of New York City, by one stroke. Peter shot 69-72-73 for a three round total of 214, four over par.

The tournament that introduced Brooke Henderson, Keegan Bradley and Paula Creamer to the golf world began this year with a qualifying round on July 17 at the Spring Lake Golf Club in Middle Island. Then there was a practice round on July 19. After the competition ended on Thursday there was an awards presentation.

This year’s event showcased 84 talented golfers, boys and girls 12 to 19, who aimed to win college golf scholarships. In addition to the competitive golf, the tournament provides a classroom environment, where the junior golfers receive training in etiquette, service and conduct as they work on their game and display their talents.

The AJGA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the development of young men and women who want to attend college on golf scholarships. More than 150 corporate sponsors support the association and nearly 60 percent of the group’s budget is generated from those sponsors and individual donations.

Lessings, Inc. is the oldest family-owned, continuously operated food service company in the U.S. The Great River-based firm has served as the tournament’s sponsor since 1999.
