Merrick teen leads day of giving to help those with breast cancer

Alyssa Mendelowitz, of Merrick, made Sunday a Fun Day of Giving and Spinning at Casa de Spin in Massapequa on Jan. 29. Mendelowitz, along with her classmates at the Schechter School of Long Island, assembled Necessities Bags to aid people with breast cancer.

Necessities Bag Inc. is an all-volunteer organization that helps women with breast cancer feel more in control of their own personal care through a bag filled with supplies and practical information about mastectomy surgery.

Aside from wound care, hygiene and personal comfort items, the bag contains the Necessities Woman to Woman Guide, which discusses ways to get ready for surgery and tips for managing recovery at home.

After assembling the bags and writing personal notes to be included in each, Mendelowitz and her fellow students took part in a spin art class at Casa de Spin.

Merrick resident, Sue Wilkowski, opened the first-ever paint event venue that combines spin-art with step-by-step painting instruction, using giant custom-made spin-art machines. The new art spot is different than any other, combining fun and funky with a huge selection of projects that are delightfully creative, and Wilkowski was pleased to host Alyssa’s Fun Day of Giving and Spinning.
