Susan Schwartz, an elementary school teacher who served on the Merrick School District Board of Education for 15 years and the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District Board of Education for eight years, will retire from the boards at the end of June.

A Merrick resident for more than 20 years and the mother of two children who graduated from both districts, Schwartz was elected to five terms on the Merrick school board. She opted not to run again this year. Through the years, she dedicated her time to overseeing nine schools as their students excelled in academics, athletics and the arts.

Schwartz served as president of both districts’ boards. She was previously a PTA leader and has continually been involved in schools and advocated for children.

“It has been an honor to serve,” Schwartz said. “Our students’ successes and our community pride have been my reward these past 15 years.

“It was a privilege to work with the many dedicated school board members, the administrators who have shown integrity and ingenuity, the caring and compassionate staff in our remarkable schools, and a community who stands up for what is best for all,” she continued. “I look forward to the continued success of our children as we all work together to prepare them for a bright future.”
