Swapping street signs in Lynbrook

Posted

The Lynbrook Board of Trustees approved a bid on June 6 to replace familiar-looking green street signs village-wide, in order to create a more refined look and sense of place.

Village Administrator John Giordano said the primary motivation for the switch was to provide a “more suburban look,” to Lynbrook, as per the village’s long-term revitalization goals.

In 2013, the village implemented about 100 signs on more major roads to test out the look. The street signs have a matte black background, black pole and white lettering — similar to the Village of Malverne’s signs.

“So what we’ve done since [2013] is we’ve searched for grants to do the rest of the village, and when we exhausted our efforts we issued a bond to do the rest of the streets,” Giordano said. Legislator William Gaylor III secured a $52,000 grant for the project in 2013.

The hardware is going to be ordered in phases and installed by Lynbrook’s Highway Department over the course of three years, since the village lacks sufficient storage for all of the signage. In addition to street signs, all of the village’s stop signs will be placed in an ornamental black casing.

“It was part of our streetscape improvement program,” Giordano said. “This was another step in beautifying the areas.”
