Taekwondo brothers win silver at national contest

Posted

A pair of brothers from Valley Stream earned silver medals at the 2016 USA Taekwondo Nationals in Richmond, Va. Earlier this month.

Brandon Sealy,13, and Bradley Sealy, 11, each earned silver at the competition, which was held July 3-10. Brandon competed in four matches. He said that he felt confident and relaxed, which is important in a sport that requires a lot of psychological control.

“I think it was the best I’ve performed in a while,” Brandon said. “You have to know that you’re better than the other person when you’re going in…I don’t really worry about how good the person is.”

Bradley competed in five matches, and echoed his brother’s confidence. “I thought that once I got into that ring, I was going to win and dominate,” he said.

The boys’ parents also practice Taekwondo with Master Tony Byon at Taekwondo V Academy, at 29 West Merrick Rd. Their mother, Sandra, said that her sons’ success in the sport has coincided with academic success. “I attribute it to the focus that Taekwondo has brought into their lives,” she said.
