Get ready for the Bellmore Striders Independence Day Run

Posted

On July 4, for the 36th time, the Bellmore Striders will bring the Independence Day Run to downtown Bellmore.

The event is held, as always, in honor of Matthew Warkala, a former Striders member and Mepham High School alumnus who died of brain cancer. Hundreds of runners race the course through Bellmore to commemorate Warkala and the Fourth of July each year.

Festivities begin at 8 a.m. in downtown Bellmore with the one-mile run for children, ages 12 and under. The four-mile run, open to all athletes, ages 13 and older, will begin at 8:30 a.m.

Tank tops will be provided to the first 600 entrants. Refreshments will be available before the race, at every mile and at the finish. Prize money will be awarded in the four-mile to the overall Top Three male and female open and masters (40-plus).

The one-mile run is open to all runners ages 12 and under, and the four-mile run is open to runners 13 and older.

The entrance fee is $12 for youths and $20 for adults, and $25 for all on race day. All 70-plus athletes pay nothing.
