A prisoner from the Nassau County Correctional Facility who appeared before a Long Beach City Court judge on March 13 attempted to escape from two Nassau County sheriffs after his hearing, police said.

Kahiem Prince Jerry, 18, of Reading, Pa., was arrested in Long Beach on March 12 on West Park Avenue and charged with burglary. He was transported to the Nassau County Correctional facility and attended court the next day, according to Lt. Eric Cregeen, a spokesman for the Long Beach Police Department.

As two county sheriffs prepared to escort Prince Jerry into the van after the hearing and take him back to the facility, he attempted to escape from custody, Cregeen said.

As one of the sheriffs attempted to open the door, he turned and observed Prince Jerry — wearing an orange jumpsuit and handcuffs attached to a belt — dart across the street.

One of the sheriffs ran into nearby LBPD headquarters and requested assistance from other officers, who immediately chased Prince Jerry.

“[They] found him lying under an SUV parked on JJ Evans Boulevard,” said Cregeen. “He was brought back to Long Beach headquarters and charged with escape in the second degree.”
