Theater
Theater lovers can partake of special “champagne” performances presented by the popular Arena Players Repertory Company, which annually provide some theatrical fun to start the New Year off with laughter and joy.
This year’s offering — at the Vanderbilt Museum’s Carriage House Theater in Centerport — is “The Owl and the Pussycat,” Dec. 31, at 9 p.m. The hit Broadway comedy, which became the popular movie vehicle for Barbra Streisand, follows a stuffy author who focuses his binoculars on a prostitute plying her trade. He complains to the landlord, has her evicted, and finds he has trouble pounding on his door with a vengeance; she is practically illiterate, but quickly absorbs language skills. She figures he owes her a pad for the night, an arrangement that leads to hilarious results.
Tickets are $60 per person, with wine, champagne, coffee and pastries served throughout the evening. See it at 180 Little Neck Rd., in Centerport. For reservations or further information call (516) 293-0674 or www.arenaplayers.org.

For the kids
New Year’s Eve arrives at Long Island Children’s Museum in the form of “Noon Year’s Eve,” its annual kid-friendly celebration. Beginning at noon on Dec. 31, LICM gets ready to ring in another year with a busy afternoon that concludes with the traditional Times Square-style “ball drop.”
“Out of This World” is this year’s theme, as the museum sets course for 2014 with an intergalactic party. During the afternoon, leading up to the museum’s “ball drop,” at 4 p.m., families can crafts and special activities, including trying out some extreme dance moves with a DJ, who will keep the fun going all afternoon long.
