Cesario places fifth at championships

Oceanside native Samantha Cesario placed fifth at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Greensboro, North Carolina.

On Saturday, Cesario scored 123.51 points in the women’s free skate. Her routine was set to “Carmen,” and she completed six triple jumps and earned improved scores on her three spins.

“It felt really good to go out and skate my best and get a I score I thought I deserved,” Cesario told Newsday.

The 21-year-old made a huge jump from Thursday night, when she placed 11th in the women’s short program with a score of 59.21. The total score, 182.82, is a new best for Cesario.

Olympian Ashley Wagner and Gracie Gold were first and second, followed by Karen Chen and another Olympian, Polina Edmunds.
