Cheerleader meets cheerleader

Oceanside High School student and Sailors cheerleader Kash Calderon met Oceanside’s Edyth DeBaun, wife of the late Joseph DeBaun, who started the OHS “Sailors” team name and was the first male cheerleader in the school’s history. Mrs. DeBaun, who had three children who were cheerleaders, recently attended the 2014 homecoming football game at OHS. She and her late husband met when they were cheerleaders. Calderon, the first male cheerleader since 2003, was named Homecoming King for 2014. Calderon is also a competitive wrestler for the school team.

“I’m so grateful to have met Mrs. DeBaun” Calderon said. “It was my honor to meet the wife of the first male cheerleader ever at Oceanside High School. It made me feel good knowing that she would reflect on memories of her husband and starting the ‘Sailors’ team name.”

Mrs. DeBaun is very proud of the students at Oceanside High School. “Cheerleaders can make the excitement or not, if they (cheerleaders) get out there, then they’re enthused, then the crowd gets enthused for the teams sake,” she said.
