Cleaning up the Shell Creek marsh

The Island Park Community Group held a clean up of the marshes around Shell Creek on Sept. 18. About 20 people donned high boots and work gloves and went out to bring back all kinds of garbage that was littering the creek banks.

Organizer Tommy Asher has been active in the clean up of the beach and marshes around Masone Beach in Island Park, along with Operation Splash.

Asher said Captain Michael Spina of Captain Mike’s Seafood in Oceanside approached Asher about doing the cleanup. Not long after EmPower Solar of Island Park, who regularly take part in the Masone Beach cleanup, also approached Asher.

Asher said this was the first time the there was a cleanup of the Shell Creek area.

In addition to EmPower and Captain Mike’s, members of the Honor Society, the Island Park Business and Residential Chamber of Commerce and LB Wake took part. All of the boats used belonged to LB Wake.

The volunteers brought back enough flotsam and jetsam to fill a 30 yard dumpster.
