Mercy, SNCH help breast cancer patients

It’s October, and the pink ribbons are out in full force for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. But beyond awareness, what does that entail? Local hospitals and cancer centers have screening, detection, treatments and support services for breast cancer patients.

At South Nassau Communities Hospital, the Center for Breast Health offers many services. The American College of Surgeons National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers has granted a full, three-year accreditation to the Center for Breast Health at SNCH’s Gertrude & Louis Feil Cancer Center. The Complete Women’s Imaging at 440 Merrick Road in Oceanside, which is a designated Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology, uses digital mammography, high-resolution ultrasound and MRI for early detection. Patients can get surgery at SNCH, including techniques that utilize plastic surgery to produce better cosmetic results.

At Mercy Medical Center, the Bishop McGann Center for Radiology and Imaging provides screening, diagnosis, treatment and follow-up care. In 2011, the center was designated a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology. Procedures include MRI with breast imaging and biopsy capabilities, CT scanners with less radiation, low-radiation digital mammography, non-invasive ultrasound and stereotactic breast biopsy.

Mercy has also partnered with the American Cancer Society to offer a free Patient Navigation Program. A Patient Navigator educates patients, informing them on the processes that take place at each stage in breast cancer care, as well as what to expect afterward. Patients are assisted in identifying resources available to them and they are empowered to become informed participants in their breast health/cancer care.
