Obituary: John Wohlfarth, 81

Oceanside native, Rockville Centre resident and former owner of Front Street Bakery John J. Wohlfarth died on Feb. 1, surrounded by his family, after a battle with kidney disease. He was 81.

Wohlfarth was born on March 16, 1933 in Oceanside and was a resident of Rockville Centre for 58 years. After graduating from Oceanside High School, he joined the Navy and traveled the world. Wohlfarth was stationed in California and that is where he met and married the love of his life, Arlene. In 1958, he joined his parents at Front Street Bakery in Rockville Centre.

Wohlfarth had many hobbies, including golfing, fishing, hunting and spending time at his “castle” in Mattituck. He had many passions in life, but the most important was spending time with his family. His children and grandchildren all had many special times with him that they will cherish forever. He had such a contagious smile that made everyone feel special.

Wohlfarth is survived by his wife of 60 years, Arlene; his children, Jeff (Angela), Lisa Acerno (Ken) and Gwen Cooleen (John); and his sister Christine McDermott. He was predeceased by his brother Walter and sister Carol McDonald. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Nicole, JJ (Leigh), Johnny (fiancé Danielle), Chris (fiancé Caitlin), Robert, Jessica, Jackie, JP, Kendall, Brian, Cliff and Christina.
