Packers program was informative, inspirational

To the Editor:

On Nov. 16, I had the pleasure of going with my grandson to the Village of Valley Stream’s event involving two Green Bay Packer Hall of Famers, Dave Robinson and Boyd Dowler, and Vince Lombardi author Royce Boyles. We were treated to a question and answer session as well as a private luncheon.

The event was about Lombardi, an idol of mine. As an Italian-American, Lombardi represented a whole culture. He showed America that Italian-Americans were not gangsters but hard working successful people of society.

The stories told by these gentlemen were insightful as well as humorous. It was astonishing to listen to Dave Robinson speak about his experience as the first African American to play in the Sugar Bowl and the adversity he went through to even get to the game. Then to hear that when he was drafted by the Packers, Lombardi treated his players with respect and made decisions based on character and talent and not race or religion.

Being able to spend an afternoon with my grandson and share a part of my childhood with him is priceless. I would like to thank the village for a wonderful event.
