The Shaw Avenue Elementary School celebrated raising $1,000 for St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a childhood cancer charity, on Dec. 23 by rallying around Principal Alejandro Rivera and shaving his head.

“The kids loved it,” Rivera said. “The kids were screaming.”

Rivera said that students chanted, “Brave to Shave,” throughout the assembly, and were very supportive of one another.

Rivera sat in a chair and faced the audience as teachers and other staff members took turns shaving a different part of his head. The fundraising period took place before the winter recess, and was launched with a goal of $500, which Rivera said the school proudly doubled.

Every grant funded by the St. Baldrick’s Foundation is for childhood cancer research.

“Part of it is just wanting to support staff and just encourage the building to get involved,” Rivera said.
