Spring brings new businesses

With spring comes construction, and with construction comes new business. All around Oceanside and Island Park, new establishments are moving in. They are welcome sights in an area still recovering from Hurricane Sandy.

Speedway was once the fourth-largest convenience store chain in the nation, and Hess the fifth-largest. Now, with Speedway’s purchase of Hess last October, it has expanded its reach from nine to 22 states and is the second-largest such chain, with 2,750 stores. It has begun the conversion of Hess’s retail operations to the Speedway brand, and, in a quick turnaround, the Hess locations at 4295 Austin Blvd., in Island Park, 2650 Long Beach Road, in Oceanside, and 571 Atlantic Ave., in Oceanside, are now Speedways.

The former QuikPick at 4495 Austin Blvd., in Island Park, is now a Bagel Boys, featuring gourmet bagels, a deli and catering.

Cumberland Farms has taken up residence at the site of the former Gulf gas station at 2962 Long Beach Road, in Oceanside.

The new Red Mango, in the Sands shopping Center in Oceanside, had a grand opening last Saturday. Its owner, Chris Cianciulli, said the establishment gives free coffee to police, firefighters and EMS workers.

The Bagel Café, in Oceanside, which was closed for renovations, has reopened. And Starbucks is seeking variances to open in the vacant lot near the Mio Posto Restaurant, at 2755 Long Beach Road in Oceanside.
